Behind the Camera with Regina Lograsso

by Sharon Curran-Wright

Most of us are amateur photographers, wielding our cell phones to record moments that we want to remember and save to our online galleries or post on social media. But when we want a photo that’s worth framing and hanging on a wall or saving as part of a family legacy, we need a professional who understands the art of capturing personality and memories on film.

Regina Lograsso

Regina Lograsso has been behind the camera since 2014, first working from her home studio in Daleville and now in her own 1200-square-foot office space in downtown Buchanan. Regina grew up in Roanoke and then spent 23 years traveling the U.S. and Japan with her military husband.  They now have three children, three grandchildren, and three dogs. When she is not photographing, Regina enjoys CrossFit, shopping for antiques, collecting coffee cups, and spending time with her great dane and two french bulldogs.

Regina loves finding beauty in simple things. She describes her photography as something beyond art, a memory to cherish, a feeling, a captured moment in time. Her style is simple, clean, and timeless.

A Boutique of Inspiration in Fincastle

by Sharon Curran-Wright

AvenueBlack is an intimate, hometown boutique with a carefully curated collection of women’s clothing and accessories, children’s clothing, and decor. Their hand-selected pieces are modern yet casual, with styles meant to spark confidence and joy. They incorporate new styles when they can, but they have found that customers really appreciate simple, classic pieces that are versatile and can be worn as transitional pieces from season to season.

Ranelle Simmons

The boutique strives to carry clothing that offers the best value and quality. Jeans, graphic tees, and flannels are by far the best sellers, and new items arrive every two weeks. AvenueBlack carries a variety of brands that reflect the values that are important to the owners, including KanCan denim, Ampersand Avenue, 7th Ray, and Blu Pepper. Many of their graphic tees, gift items, and accessories come from small businesses all over the United States. Freshwater Design is a small business based in Georgia that creates some of the custom Fincastle keychains.

Local Hiking Trails

Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian Trail crosses Route 43 just 4 miles from Buchanan’s historic Main Street. The Appalachian Trail extends more than 2,180 miles from Main to Georgia with a protected 250,000 acre greenway. The Appalachian Trail Conservancy was instrumental in the passage of the federal legislation that designated the A.T. as America’s first national scenic trail in 1968.

The entrance to the Appalachian Trail along Route 43 is just below the ramp onto the Blue Ridge Parkway and offers limited parking. The Town is a rest stop and recharging point for hikers along the trail who use the Town’s U.S. Post Office, Buchanan Library, various shops and restaurants as well as occasionally setting up tents overnight at private homes willing to share accommodations. Often town residents offer shuttle service to hikers to and from the trail. The U.S. Post Office on Main Street has a Hiker Box with food items available to hikers. www.appalachiantrail.org

Apple Orchard Falls

Apple Orchard Falls is one of Virginia’s tallest and most spectacular waterfalls. Singing streams, dancing down cascades, huge boulders, and thick stands of forest surround stunning vistas and towering bluff lines. The 7.5-mile loop trail is moderately difficult.

Apple Orchard Falls

Apple Orchard Mountain was named for the nature of the dominant northern red oak forests on its summits and ridges. The weather is so severe on the upper elevations of the mountain that the trees have taken on a stunted appearance, as if they have been trimmed and pruned over the decades. The Appalachian Trail and the Blue Ridge Parkway pass within a short distance of the top of Apple Orchard Mountain.

Apple Orchard Falls is a moderately difficult, 7.5-mile hike but offers a great waterfall at the end as a reward.
